Review:
“Once in a generation a woman comes along who changes everything, Tina Fey is not that woman, but she met that woman once and acted weird around her.” That is the description of the book on the back cover. From the moment you read that, you know you are about to read a very funny, well worded, interesting book.
Tina Fey grew up in in the suburbs of Pennsylvania in a middle class family. She has an older brother who is eight years older than she is. She tells us that her mother described her as a, “wonderful surprise,” because her mother had Tina at the age of forty. Tina goes onto explain how during her childhood she was praised and spoiled because she was this “wonderful surprise.” She then goes on to recall her days in theater camp where she made life-long friends and memories. You can definitely tell by the way she explains her time there that this was a great time in her life. She fell in love with theater and was able to experience acting and directing for the first time. Tina then goes on to talk about her college years and the years shortly after. She attended the University of Virginia, majoring in Theater. She doesn’t really talk about college much, which makes you think that it wasn’t as fun a time in her life as theater camp or doing improv at Second City, which she does later. After college she gets a job working the front desk at the YMCA and describes hilariously what it is like to work with the general public. This was her first real job out of college and it was nothing short of mediocre. She basically just checked people into the YCMA. During this time she started taking classes with the Second City. The Second City is an improv school in Chicago. After getting a promotion at the YMCA, she quit about two months later to take a job touring with the Second City.
Touring with the Second City is where Tina’s career in comedy officially began. She would go all around the country with her improv team and perform shows. That is where she met her now best friend, Amy Poehler, and where she fell in love with improv. She then went on to be a writer for Saturday Night Live and then write and create her own show, 30 Rock.
Throughout the entire book, the tone is very casual. While reading, you feel as though you are having a conversation with Tina, rather than just reading an autobiography. She tells her stories with hilarious metaphors and similes and you feel like you are really able to get inside her head. She invites you into her life, places that you wanted to go, and places that you didn’t even know existed, through the entirety of the book and makes you feel like you now know something everyone else doesn’t.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone. Especially people that are fans of comedy; Saturday Night Live and 30 Rock in particular, and of course people who are fans of Tina Fey, it will only make you love her more.
I've never watched any of her shows and I like Tina Fey, I just don't know her and her work well. Would someone like me enjoy this book?
