Review:
Into the Wild is about Chris McCandless who comes from a wealthy family, a graduate from Emory University, and a great athlete. Instead of pursuing a successful career, he decides to give all of his money to charity, give away all of his possessions, and go on a journey to Alaska. Chris wants to isolate himself from the world, and wants to live in the wild. The book focuses on the events leading up to Chris living in Alaska, and the author tries to make the reader understand why Chris decided to go on this dangerous journey. The book focuses on the core question "Why did Chris McCandless decide to give up everything to live in the wild of Alaska?"
What makes Into the Wild an interesting read and unique book is that it contains so much perspective. The author, Jon Krakauer, gives his own perspective of what happened to Chris and tries to get the reader to understand the events that lead up to him being in Alaska. Jon himself has a lot in common with Chris; they both love the wild and grew up in the same family dynamic. The book also contains interviews with people that Chris crossed paths with, and gets their opinion on Chris. The authors writing style is very easy to follow, and makes the book an easy read but still makes the reader think. The tone of the story is light, but also serious. The author also uses a lot of descriptive words to bring out the imagery in the story, which is important because it helps make the reader understand the struggles that Chris went through living in the wild.
Anyone from the age 13 and up would enjoy this book because it is an interesting read and makes the reader make connections to Chris and really think about how we all feel the need to want to escape from our problems. This book will want to make the reader not put it down, and keep the reader interested on each page.
